Rollies and ready-mades: is one type of cigarette better than the other?

 

Tobacco companies are always trying to come up with new ways to market their toxic products. In recent years, tobacco companies have found a way to plant the idea in the minds of the general public that rollies are somehow safer or healthier than ready-made. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Rollies are hand-rolled cigarettes. They are cheaper to buy than ready-made cigarettes because they require more effort; people have to create the cigarette from a filter, rolling paper and loose tobacco. Many people have also been led to believe that rollies are not only the cheaper cigarette option, but also the “healthier” cigarette option. But rollies are not healthy at all.

Research shows that rollies contain the same amount of toxins as their ready-made brethren. They also contain the same amount of sugar. Smoking rollies will not mitigate the health hazards associated with tobacco smoke; smoking rollies will only intensify these harmful conditions like heart disease, low immunity and even cancer. Contrary to the tobacco rumour mill, rollies are not some kind of healthier option that stands in between heavy smoking and smoking cessation. Rollies are cigarettes, plain and simple, and they should be regarded as such.

Instead of smoking rollies under a false health pretense, people need to realise that there is no safe or healthy tobacco option—the only safe option is the quit smoking option. However, for many people this is easier said than done.

Since smoking is a psychosocial habit, many people have an extremely difficult time quitting because they have not addressed the emotional issues underlying their dependency. People often smoke as a way of relieving stress, as a reward or as a means of socialising. Over time, people learn to associate positive feelings with cigarettes, whether rollies or ready-mades, and as these attitudes become habituated smoking cessation becomes more and more difficult.

The good news is that there are a variety of therapeutic methods which help people quit smoking and one very effective approach is quit smoking hypnosis. A hypnotherapist helps a people unlearn old, destructive habits and then helps them replace these habits with healthier approaches to life.
