The Harmful Effects of Nicotine

Nicotine is one of over 4,000 toxins found in cigarette smoke. Nicotine is an alkaloid poison that both stimulates and depresses the systems found in the human body. Some of the more dangerous effects of nicotine include:

  • Gastrointestinal problems: Nicotine depresses the appetite and as a result, many smokers eat much less than they should. This throws the gastrointestinal system off balance and many smokers experience constipation, inflammation and general discomfort.
  • Heart Palpitations: Nicotine stimulates the heart and this can lead to the development of arrhythmia and other irregular heart beat problems.
