How does smoking affect your sleep?

Smoking affects sleep

Nicotine is a stimulant and can reduce the ability to sleep.

There are many things that can disturb our sleep patterns, from sleep apnea to stress.

Issues caused by chronic sleep loss

Chronic sleep loss can cause many issues such as weight gain, a weakened immune system, depression, and chronic fatigue. Many people don’t realize how fragile our ability to sleep really is. Sleep can be easily disturbed by anything. This includes cigarettes, stress and many other emotional factors. In fact, smoking is a major disruptor of your sleeping habits. Let’s take a closer look at how smoking cigarettes hinders your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

What causes sleep disruption

One way that smoking harms your sleeping patterns is by disrupting what doctors and researchers call the sleep architecture. The sleep architecture is the structure of your sleep. That is the patterns of sleep cycles that constitute your entire sleep experience during the night. You should typically move through a cycle that ranges from light sleep to deep sleep, optimally without waking up in between stages.

Smokers experience something called sleep fragmentation with regards to their sleep architecture. This is something that can affect anyone. Smokers are four times more likely than nonsmokers to experience interrupted sleep. Smokers have a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep than non smokers. Smokers are also less likely to fall into a “deep sleep” stage of sleeping which is a vital part of resting and rejuvenating their body during the night. Thus, smokers are not able to get the proper rest they need during the night.

Health impacts due to smoking cigarettes

The tired body of a smoker is more susceptible to illness and stress. Therefore smokers are at an even higher risk of getting sick or feeling glum because their bodies are working overtime to combat the toxins from tobacco.

Smoking can also increase the risk of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If a person snores loudly and feels tired even after a full night’s sleep, They might have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is characterized by loud snoring and a loss of breath that causes the sleeper to wake up continuously through the night. Since smokers obstruct their airways with cigarette toxins and the byproducts of their mucus, many smokers can develop sleep apnea or sleep apnea like symptoms. In fact, the lauded Mayo Clinic research hospital in the U.S. has determined that smokers are three times more likely to experience sleep apnea or sleep apnea like symptoms.

If you are a smoker you have probably heard the thousand and one reasons to quit smoking and sleeping is one of them. Your body cannot function properly if it does not get the rejuvenation of a good night’s sleep. Smoking cigarettes disturbs an already weakened body’s ability to rest and regenerate. If you want to sleep better and stay healthy, then put that last cigarette out for good!

Closet Smokers and Their Burden of Secrecy

Closet smoking can be so difficult to manage. Sometimes the cravings are so strong that it is really challenging.

The power of the uncsoncious/non-conscious/subconscious mind

Quit Smoking with Hypnosis North Brisbane

Quit Smoking with Hypnosis

I had a client once who came in to quit smoking with hypnosis. He had a distinct odour of cigarette smoke. However one of the reasons he wanted to quit, he said, was that his wife didn’t know he smoked. I asked him how that could be possible as he really did smell.

Apparently he owned his own business.  He explained the odour to his wife that he drove the workers home each day. He said they smoked in his car. So he was getting away with it.

However he said that he took his wife away for a 2 week holiday once and he never felt or thought of a cigarette the whole time. Of course when he got back he was really keen to go back to work so he could have a smoke. Perhaps this little story emphasises the power of the unconscious mind. We really are in control.

Another example is when a smoker travels on a long flight. He doesn’t have any urge to smoke cigarettes during that time. Yet they rush to an outlet as soon as they land so they can have a cigarette.

Power of Marketing and Advertising

Major tobacco companies have not relinquished the will to continue marketing their products. This is despite the fact that smoking is still widely prevalent and cigarettes have actually become quite taboo in recent years. Whereas smoking cigarettes was  quite a status symbol in the 1950’s and 60’s (Think of a chain smoking Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or any of the big shots in Madmen)

Cigarettes have now been relegated to being trashy and unhealthy. In fact in most countries, especially Australia, they are socially frowned on and seen as bad taste. The problem with making cigarettes taboo is that the once enticing cigarette is a potent combination that often leads to lies and secrecy and thus engenders the phenomenon of the closet smoker.

Closet smokers are secret smokers

They make sure to hide their nicotine habit from specific people. This may include family, friends, partners, or coworkers. Closet smokers have developed a smoking habit that they are ashamed of. It is something they crave and simultaneously feel the need to hide. Some may hide their smoking for the thrill. Others because it makes them feel dirty. Then there are others who don’t want to disappoint the ones they love. Whatever the reason, closet smoking is not just physically harmful, it is psychologically and relationally harmful as well.

Reasons for Closet Smoking

Perhaps you are a closet smoker and you want to break free of this double-bind habit. Well done! Here are a couple of questions you may need to ask yourself:-

  • Identify why you are smoking
  • Why are you smoking in secrecy
  • How is the smoking in secrecy impacting your relationship/s
  • What is the emotional burden of smoking on your life
  • How will this affect you if the person or persons you are hiding your smoking habit from find out that you are a smoker
  • If you have a shared banking arrangement, how are you managing to hide the fact you are spending so much money on smoking
  • Perhaps there are other questions. In making a decision to quit smoking, these will help you to weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of continuing to smoke.

It is one thing to take on smoking as a social habit, however smoking can be an anti-social habit. This is what closet smoking is. Closet smoking can certainly have its drawbacks as mentioned above. It may also be a way for you to deal with hidden feelings of shame or fear that you have about yourself and your relationship with others. It may also be a sign that you are trying to avoid problems. These may be problems you are having in your life. It may also be the feeling of being rejected or punished by those who love you.

Secrets are Burdens

Whatever the reason you are engaging in closet smoking, it is ultimately something only you can identify, admit, and change. One thing to remember is that closet smoking is secretive and secrets are burdens. Secrets keep us isolated from our true selves and from those we love. Smoking can be a difficult habit to break and it often requires you to find support from others. If you are keeping your struggle with your smoking habit hidden, then you are less likely to be able to stop it. If you want to give up the secrets and the detrimental ways that they impact your life, open up those closet doors today and start living in the light of honesty and health.

Maureen Hamilton Hypnotherapist

Sometimes we fear attempting to give up smoking. Why? That awful fear of being a failure. With hypnosis there is no such thing as failure, just feedback. There are times when people have struggled to quit smoking as they have been using the cigarette as a crutch. So a short time after quitting successfully with hypnosis, they go through stress and reach for their crutch, the cigarette and start smoking again. This is not common but it does happen. So what can we do to resolve this.

This experience may be due to stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD etc. Therefore these emotions need to be addressed. As a hypnotherapist, Maureen assists people in these areas with The Richards Trauma Process (TRTP). TRTP is now being used not only in Australia but in other countries around the world. This process is one of the most successful therapies in assisting people to address those negative experiences and especially trauma.

Rationalization: The Smoking Blame Game

Quit Smoking Hypnosis

Mature Couple Arguing Over Smoking At Home

Smokers tend to have many excuses for why they started smoking and why they can’t stop.

Blaming it on others

One of the most common ways that smokers deflect their role as a smoker is to blame someone else. You have probably heard a smoker say at one point or another that they started smoking because their parents smoked. I recall my parents both smoked and travelling in the car was a bit unpleasant especially when there were nine kids in the car as well. Perhaps with those numbers we shared the smoke so it may not have affected us so much.

Another excuse they can’t quit because their girlfriend smokes and it would be too hard to quit.  Mind you I have many people quit with hypnosis and they have a loved on who is smoking. Once the loved one sees them as a non smoker, they they will often come in and become non smokers as well.

What is Rationalisation

In psychology, this form of excuse making is called rationalisation. If we take a close look at this phenomenon, we will be able to get better insight into the mind of the smoker.

Rationalisation is a defense mechanism that people use to justify or explain controversial behaviors or feelings in order to make them seem more tolerable or acceptable. People use rationalisation to encourage behavior that is unhealthy or self-destructive. This then gives them an escape route to keep practicing such behavior. When it is clear that it is detrimental to their health and well-being, most people will make changes. Smokers who rationalize their habit by way of the “everyone else is doing it” or “they made me” method, seek to normalise smoking. This gives themselves a false sense of comfort that what they are doing isn’t all that bad. When in reality, it is wreaking incredible damage on their mental and physical bodies.

Smoking is a choice!

Smokers who rationalise their habit by blaming it on others, use it as an avoidance tactic. This then circumvents what is in their eyes, an inconvenient truth.

Smoking is a choice and you are the only person in charge of the choices you make.

Nobody kidnaps a smoker’s child and tells them they won’t return them unless they smoke everyday. Most partners and parents don’t hold a gun to a smoker’s head if they don’t light up the next cigarette. Just as you have the power to choose to smoke, you also have the power to quit and start building habits that reinforce a healthy lifestyle. The victim mentality, the one that is so strongly reinforced by rationalisation, will only keep you a prisoner of your own mind, separated from personal growth and healthy living.

There are many ways to combat the victim mentality and these go along with the smoking blame game. If you feel you need help learning how to make the healthy choice of quitting smoking, then reach out. Stop harmful habits by talking to someone about it. Considering therapeutic methods that are based on mind over matter and personal responsibility. Of course the best method to quit in just one relaxing session is hypnotherapy. Are You a Non-Smoker While Your Partner is a Smoker?

Argument about Smoking

Young couple arguing about her smoking

This is not unusual as many people who are still smoking feel at a loss to quit smoking.

Living with a Smoker can be a real Challenge

Having lived with my husband for many years who was a heavy smoker, was not only a worry regarding his health, but there was also the cost. He was one of the healthiest men around, had never been to hospital and so very rarely was sick. However he was a heavy smoker and could not quit smoking.

Then one day at work he experienced a rather nasty back pain. An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to hospital where they discovered he had a heart attack. A month later he had a triple bypass.

It took him around 6 weeks to recover before he could go back to work. His job was quite stressful, so he looked for work elsewhere. Since he had worked in PNG, he did the research and we ended up back in Bougainville, PNG where he was the manager of the retail arm of Bougainville Copper. We loved it up there and I took on the role of Nursing Superintendent of the local hospital.

Included in my husband’s job was the management of businesses in other areas of PNG. Towards the end of the second year, my husband had returned from one of his trips around the territory and complained of the back pain again. Of course, we both knew what this meant. He was medevac’d down to Brisbane the next day where they discovered he had lung cancer and at the same time, having had another heart attack which was caused by the cancer.

Over the next 11 months it was challenging with chemo, radiation etc. However, I was very grateful as we had this time together before he died. It was heart breaking to watch him go downhill especially for our four children.

The reason I am sharing this story with you, if I had put pressure on my husband at any time to quit smoking, it would have been useless. When we put pressure on a person, they become irritated and the wall goes up. “They will give up smoking when they are ready, not on our timetable.”

The Questions is, What can You do to Help Your Partner to Quit Smoking?

Wanting to quit smoking is really important. Remember your partner may not want to quit smoking. So you need to be subtle.

My brochures are in many health centres around Brisbane. When I speak to a person who has someone who smokes cigarettes, eg husband, relative or friend, they ask me what they can do. If the smoker normally collects the mail from the mailbox, I suggest they leave a brochure in the mailbox for them to find. Perhaps if you cannot find a brochure, then do the research and find a hypnotherapist who is proficient at assisting people to become non-smokers. Make contact with them and ask for one of their brochures. Maureen Hamilton is a Hypnotherapist and offers a Lifetime Guarantee and loves sharing information with people.

Ask Your Doctor

If you are going to the doctors with your partner, ask your doctor what his thoughts are on Hypnosis to Quit Smoking. Most doctors are now more open to Hypnosis to Quit Smoking. In fact, we often have clients coming in to quit smoking after their doctor has suggested it or made a referral.

Over the years I have given talks to many locations including medical centres, especially to doctors and nurses and other staff. They are becoming more acceptable to hypnosis especially for quitting smoking.

Share positive stories with your loved one.

There are many people who have quit smoking. If you hear of someone you know who has quit smoking, then share this with your loved one. Do it as casually as possible.

There are many couples smoking. Perhaps one is keen to stop while the other is not sure.  Each person is on a journey and it is their responsibility to live their life the best way they know how.  If the other person is unsure, then putting pressure on them to quit will possibly have a negative effect. They will stop when they are ready.  Certainly not when they are being pushed or nagged at. So look after yourself and do what is best for you.

Is it possible to be a non-smoker living with a smoker?

Hypnotherapist Maureen Hamilton says, “Yes, absolutely! There are many couples where one person is a smoker while the other is a non-smoker and they are very successful remaining non-smokers.“

Role Model

Becoming a non-smoker often has a positive effect on the other person. Demonstrating how easy it is to stop smoking and how good it feels, may inspire them to also stop.  That is with hypnosis which is really easy. Ask anyone who has been to hypnosis.  Otherwise check out the success stories on the website

Challenges when Quitting Cigarettes

Did you know that cigarettes contain sugar? Most people are unaware that cigarettes contain sugar.

Why is sugar such an important topic when quitting smoking

Quitting Smoking Hypnosis

Quitting Smoking with Hypnosis

When going cold turkey to quit smoking, this information is especially important. It can be the cause of that irritability you see and notice in people when they do quit, especially if they are smoking more than 10 cigarettes a day. The other important factor is the hunger people experience. Over the years I have seen how this can impact on the successful outcome of people quitting.

Everyone is asked to bring water and fruit to their session. This chap let’s call him Peter, left his Quit Smoking Hypnosis session very happy as he was a non-smoker. However, he had not bought the fruit and water but made assurances that he would be going to the shops to get some.

His wife was on a late shift, so he had to collect the kids from school. He went home and after homework, feeding and bathing the kids and putting them to bed, he was really cranky. Why? He had not bought fruit on the way home and was waiting to have dinner with his partner. The kids had been irritable and fighting which upset him. He did not have any fruit from the time he left me at 2pm and it was already 9pm. He was ready to blame the cigarettes because of his bad mood. So, what did he do? You guessed it – he had a cigarette. He was not happy with himself and worse still, felt like a failure. There is no such thing as failure – only feedback. The feedback here is to recognise the important sugar plays in quitting smoking. Needless to say, he came back and we did the session again. He left a very happy man.

Being Hungry when Quitting Smoking

This may also be attributed to the loss of the sugar. It may also be due to the hand-to-mouth habit that has been going on for years. There is that urge to have something to eat. Many people will succumb to eating and hence the weight goes on.

Some People do not put on Weight when Quitting Smoking

Research has shown that while most people put on weight, some more than others; many do not. Many people get caught out by not being prepared for that unexpected urge to eat. For example, when working, usual lunches are prepared and so often they will be eaten at morning tea with nothing left for lunch or later on.

Solution to Wanting to eat When Quitting Smoking

Preparation is most important when quitting.

Ensure you have a good supply of healthy fruit. Now while we know that all fruit is healthy, best to go for the smaller fruit eg. Blueberries, mandarins etc.

High protein snacks are invaluable for those times when hunger creeps in. The most important high protein snack is around mid-afternoon. Most people do not eat between lunch and dinner and then they are starving hungry by the time they get home from work. Being hungry can also make us feel cranky and that is when arguments can start which we later regret.

So preparation is everything. Do the research and know what is needed when quitting smoking. Leaving it to chance is not an option. This is a serious step. Remember that Hypnosis to Quit Smoking is extremely successful and people often look on their success as if it was magic. Thankfully there is no magic with hypnosis. Hypnosis is just changing the habit or the images you have about smoking, so you just do not want that cigarette any more.

What Is It About Teenage Girls That Makes Them So Difficult?

Moody Teenage Girls

Teenagers can be challenging

Ah the Teenage Years.

They creep up on parents out of nowhere, and explode with a hard slap of reality in the face. This is usually in the form of moody behavior, snide comments, and flurries of rolled eyes. Children who once worshiped and idolized their parents suddenly recoil at the thought spending time with them or listening to anything they say.

The teenage years can be a particularly turbulent time for mums and their daughters, and many mums, forgetting how difficult their own teenage years were, scratch their heads and wonder: why are teenage girls so difficult?

The teenage years are difficult for both boys and girls, just in different ways. The onset of puberty between ages 12 and 13 brings many confusing changes to girls’ lives. They start their periods, experience sexual curiosity, begin forming an individuated identity, and lives with the ups and downs of their powerful hormone cycles. These hormones control girls’ emotionally and they becomes prone to anxiety, depression, or rapid mood swings.

Recognise that Hormones play a significant effect on Mood

Being prepared for these mood swings can be invaluable. One of the best ways is to be prepared. There is an excellent book written by Michael Carr-Gregg titled Bitchface Princess. Yes I know. You are probably thinking what an appropriate name.

Girls become increasingly concerned with emulating those in their peer groups. Many girls want to chase “cool” and endeavour to find a way to fit in. This then throws parents, especially mums, into the adolescent stew which at times can produce a toxic reaction: screaming, fights, hysteria, sobbing fits, slammed doors etc.

The turbulence of the teenage girl years is unavoidable. It is something that every family must deal with, but that doesn’t mean it is easy. As a parent, there will be many rough days. Here are a few tips to mitigate the stress levels when dealing with your teenage girl, and keep your sanity as a parent.

Your Teenagers Brain is Still Developing

The frontal lobe for your child is that part of the brain responsible for impulse control, judgment, and decision-making. It doesn’t fully mature until we are in our early 20s. So often teenagers want to be an adult and it is as though they are striving so hard to make it happen. Yet their brain is still developing even though the rest of the body has developed and often appears as an adult.

Set Clear Boudaries

Teenagers aren’t happy when they are acting out. So they will need guidance and support to see them weather the “storm” of puberty. They will need clear boundaries set so they can feel supported.

This too Shall Pass

Teenage girls are quite myopic, and temper storms are usually quick to blow over. As a parent, your role is to diffuse the situation, not add fuel to the fire. The next time your teenage daughter rolls her eyes, screams, slams a door etc. just rest in the comfort that all storms reach a calm end and try not to engage her or egg her on.

Take Time for Yourself

Don’t let the stress levels surrounding your teenage daughter control the household. Make sure you take time to do things you like. Engage in activities that re-charge your battery and make you feel like you have a safe space outside of the teen disaster zone.

Keep an open mind and an open heart

Your teenage daughter needs you and your support more than you know. Not every aspect of a teenage girl’s life is marked by extreme behavior. Teen girls spend a lot of their time calm, collected, sensitive, and sweet too. Keep yourself available to your teen daughter and let her know you are there to talk to her about anything she needs. Make sure she knows how much you love here, even when your “I love you’s” are greeted with rolled eyes and an annoyed “I know mom(or dad)”

Teenage girls can be difficult, but as a parent it is your job to remember that you were once a teen too. It is your role now as an adult, to play the balanced role in the family. If you treat your teenage daughter with love, kindness, respect, and show her firm boundaries about what behavior is acceptable or unacceptable, then you will be able to surf the teenage wave to a more fulfilling relationship with your daughter in her adult life.

If you found this article of interest and feel your daughter of even yourself would like assistance to weather the storm of puberty, then reach out. You can also read other parenting articles that may be of interest.

You Would Like More Help

There are a number of reasons why parents are seeking help for their children. The most common one is trauma especially with bullying at school or in other locations.

Recently I noticed teens struggling to cope with parents separation and they are feeling traumatised. Check out the information provided on Master Your Life Power. It is a wonderful source of interesting information.

Becoming a Non Smoker

Did you ever smoke and are you now a non smoker? You must feel that sense of pride and achievement, and no doubt very, very happy and relieved. Yes, and of course it is an achievement and you have made it – so well done!

Receiving lots of comments and congratulations?

Family are usually the ones who appreciate the sacrifice and effort you have made because they are the ones who worry about you. Clients often tell me that their partner hasn’t made them give up.

Hugh Hamilton-smoking kills

Hugh Hamilton-Smoking killed him at age 47

However so often the smell, mess and worry about their partners health as a smoker is the true reality of their concern and silence. They feel helpless as I did with my husband when he continued to smoke.

Being a trained nurse and knowing the facts, resulted in a great deal of stress especially with four young children. When my husband had his first heart attack, I was scared and worried, even more worried when he decided he wanted to work in PNG. Thankfully the hospital on Bougainville was the best equipped hospital in PNG. So we were blessed.

Twenty months later when he had his second heart attack I was working as the Nursing Superintendent at the hospital. The Medical Superintendent medivac’d him out the next day so he was in Brisbane when they diagnosed him two days later with extensive lung cancer. This had caused a blockage of one of the main arteries to his heart resulting in his heart attack. I sent one of the trained staff to travel with him so I could stay with the children.

The dangers of living on Bougainville

Conflict began to emerge from the start of mining operations at Panguna in 1988 and continued for 10 years. Many of the local landowners were opposed to the mine because it attracted an influx of workers from other parts of PNG.

At that time Bougainville was becoming more isolated with the violence. The airport had been destroyed along with all the planes except one which had been severely damaged. It was imperative I fly to Brisbane to be with my husband as the news wasn’t good. Thankfully the staff were able to repair the plane sufficiently which allowed it to continue flying. It was a difficult time as I had two children still on the island.

A dear friend agreed to care for the children until we could organise flights for the children out of Bougainville. They also packed up our house which was a huge task. Such kindness is never forgotten. Another very kind person gave up their seat on the next available flight to allow me to travel to Brisbane, all the while unsure of how my husband was doing.

We had to make four stops including an overnight stay in Cairns due to the problems on Bougainville. At every stop I wasn’t sure if I had a seat on the next flight as I hadn’t booked. However the airline used their emergency seating to accommodate me. When I arrived in Brisbane my husband was very sick as they had started chemotherapy. There was such a lot of cancer the body struggled to remove the dead cells from the cancer and chemo.

What about the Children?

I was delighted when the children arrived three days later and we could spend time with their father. We had 11 months with him before he died a most unpleasant death having gone through chemo. Later on he was diagnosed with brain tumours and required radiotherapy. However I will always look back on those 11 months and feel gratitude for this time with him. Wherever I can, I will continue to help other families so their loved one can have additional time with them. So love your partner, families and the world at large. You have had your life extended by up to 14 years now so love your life and enjoy those people around you.

Quit Smoking Cold Turkey Timeline

Quitting smoking cold turkey is not easy. Just as you become accustomed to pulling a cigarette out, your body and mind become accustomed to smoking. You develop a habit, and pretty soon it is almost a unconscious reflex. You have a cigarette when you get in your car. You have one when you have your first cup of coffee. You have one the second you step out of the office. As you continue to fuel your smoking habit, your body keeps destroying itself, and suddenly you’re hit with the realization that you need to stop.

Quitting cold turkey does not work for everyone. As mentioned before, the act of smoking is a habit, so quitting involves breaking the habit. And that is tough—imagine quitting another habit, such as biting your nails or cracking your knuckles. While you have chosen to quit smoking cold turkey, there is another option which is so much easier and that quit smoking hypnosis. Instead of taking days or even weeks to quit smoking cold turkey, with quit smoking hypnosis, it is just one session. The added bonus is that you are provided with a Lifetime Guarantee.

What is the Quit Smoking Cold Turkey Timeline

The timeline of quitting smoking cold turkey is relatively short: Within 3 weeks of not having any cigarettes,

Quit Smoking Timeline

Quit Smoking Timeline details how your body will benefit from Quitting Smoking

all of the nicotine will be out of your system, and withdrawal symptoms should cease. But, if you’re a smoker, imagine no cigarettes for three weeks. Most smokers who choose to quit smoking cold turkey often wind up giving in and smoking again. This can happen over and over and over again. Quitting simply doesn’t stick—you’re still left with the habit that you aren’t fulfilling. This leads to cravings. Many people choose to replace cigarettes with other vices, such as e‑cigarettes, or try prescribed medications to quit smoking. Even when using these, you still want to smoke. You are constantly fighting the urge to have a cigarette and trying to ignore cravings.

Long Term Changes in your body when you Quit Smoking Cold Turkey suddenly

The timeline depends on you quitting rather than quitting slowly for example one cigarette a day. So the timeline will vary considerably. Here is a Timeline for the changes that take place in your body when you stop suddenly.

What is the Emotional Impact when you Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

It is a brave person who decides to quit smoking cold turkey as the emotional impact can be so severe. Some people use the cigarette as a crutch, an emotional crutch. The negative emotions that may impact them may be anger, sadness, fear, guilt or even hurt feelings. A person who is in a relationship and has anyone of these emotions may struggle within their relationship due to the sudden or even gradual changes that are occuring in their mind and body. The damage to the relationship can be long lasting and hurtful.

Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

Angry man trying to quit smoking cold turkey

Being aware of this problems comes as a challenge, even with the Quit Smoking Hypnosis. An assessment is done with every client to ensure they are not only ready and quitting smoking for themselves, we also check if they are using the cigarette as a crutch. Then we work on how that person can be helped so they can quit smoking with hypnosis successfully.

How Hypnotherapy is the Answer rather than Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

Think of hypnotherapy as quitting on your own terms with your hypnotherapist helping you. After just one session with a hypnotherapist, you can become a nonsmoker. Doesn’t that sound better than weeks of agonizing withdrawal symptoms and fighting the urge to smoke?

Finding a hypnotherapist you can trust is crucial to the process as a whole. If there is any shred of doubt in your mind, hypnotherapy may not work. You need to be ready to trust your hypnotherapist, and you need to truly want to be a non-smoker. You must be ready and committed.

Think about why you started smoking

Was it stress relief? Peer pressure? No matter how much you enjoyed cigarettes in the beginning, chances are you don’t enjoy them now as you once did. You reach for a cigarette because smoking controls you, not because you truly want that cigarette. This is what makes hypnotherapy for smoking so unique. It works to diminish this relationship that smoking has with your mind. After meeting with a good hypnotherapist, you will never want a cigarette again. The habit will be gone.

Now think about why you want to quit. Do you want to do it for your partner? Your kids? Is your family trying to get you to quit? No matter how close to your heart the reason may be, you will not be successful until you want to quit.

How Can Hypnosis Help Me

It can be a real challenge for people who smoke to make the decision to quit smoking. The habit is so powerful and people feel controlled by the cigarettes. They just want to quit!

Unfortunately this can be a challenge. Why? So often they have tried many methods to quit but they are still smoking as none of these worked. Alternatively they may have quit smoking but sadly they started smoking again. So what is the solution?

Quit Smoking Hypnosis is the Solution

While many methods to quit smoking take time, sometimes many months, the Quit Smoking Hypnosis is just one session. The comment people usually make is, “that was so relaxing. I really loved it.” In fact most people would like to stay in the chair and would actually prefer to stay in hypnosis.

Motivation to Quit Smoking

One of the great motivators for people to quit is their health. The chart above adds to this providing a timeline of how the health improves once they have quit smoking with hypnosis.

Preparation is Important with Quit Smoking Hypnosis

The idea of a silver bullet to quit smoking or instant success is more of a fallacy. This habit has been created in a person’s mind many years ago. Therefore, for many years since and with each cigarette they smoke, the habit has become more powerful. So preparation is the key to quitting smoking.

What is the Preparation Required when Quitting Smoking with Hypnosis?

The most important preparation is the decision to quit smoking. Now that doesn’t include being forced to quit smoking by a partner or loved one eg family. Take for example a client who says they want to quit. However when asked why she wants to quit, she turns to her partner sitting beside her and said, “If I don’t quit, he will leave me!” Firstly that is blackmail and most importantly the person is not giving up for themselves. They are giving it up for someone else. There is very little chance of success and even if they do succeed, their ability to sustain themselves as a non smoker is limited. What often happens is they will start smoking again and then they may feel like a failure as it didn’t work. This has a really negative impact on a person’s life. It makes them believe that it is impossible for them to quit smoking.

The Reasons and Benefits to Quit Smoking with Hypnosis

The next step is writing down the reasons for quitting and the benefits. This is followed by when they smoke and what are they going to do during those periods or  times when they do smoke. The most common times when people smoke are first thing in the morning, after meals, driving, stressed, drinking alcohol, work breaks and boredom. So it is important to identify these times and any other times. Then think about what they are going to do instead of reaching for a cigarette.

Understanding and Experiencing Hypnosis

Here are Life Coach to Quit Smoking we provide two audios in preparation. The first one explains the process and is very informative. The second audio allows the person to experience hypnosis with a Stress Reduction and Relaxation audio. Both of these are very important and part of the preparation for the Quit Smoking Hypnosis.

Quit Smoking Hypnosis

Quitting smoking can be such a challenge for many people. They may not have tried the quit smoking hypnosis.

They may have tried other methods and sometimes these work, quite successfully. Although some have had to make considerable sacrifices and gone through difficulties while using the product. Some experience nightmares, nausea and a number of other side effects.

Thankfully the quit smoking hypnosis works so well that people are non smokers at the end of just one session. The usual comment is that it was such a relaxing experience. Better still, they report back months, years later that they never felt like a cigarette again after their quit smoking hypnosis session.

Sadly though using other methods, many fall back into becoming a smoker again, maybe 1 week later and some many years later. The most important message is that smoking is a habit. We are all told and led to believe that smoking is an addiction. So why is so hard to quit smoking?

When do People Start Smoking?

Teens Smoking will need to Quit Smoking Hypnosis later

Teenagers Smoking Cigarettes will need to Quit Smoking Hypnosis in the future

This is a question we could ask ourselves, that is if we ever smoked. You may have started smoking in your teenage years. That is the time when we desire to be an adult. Of course it is often due to peer pressure or just experimenting. Teenagers often feel as though they are invincible and “smoking won’t hurt me!” and this is a frequent comment. Perhaps you can relate to this.

Of course you may have coughed and spluttered but eventually you decided you enjoyed it. The unconscious mind is there to keep us happy. So once it registers you enjoy smoking, it puts it in as a habit. Of course, the more you smoke, the stronger that habit becomes. So where is the habit stored? In the unconscious mind. This is why, when using quit smoking hypnosis, it is so successful. While you are in that relaxed state of hypnosis, I can talk to the unconscious mind and give it the message that you want to be a non smoker.

Is Smoking an Addiction or a Habit?

I had a conversation with a doctor a number of years ago regarding this message. He came in to do the quit smoking hypnosis too.

However he was not convinced that it wasn’t an addiction. I went through and explained and reasoned why it cannot be an addiction.

Our conversation went like this – “No doubt doctor you have cared for many patients who have been addicted, perhaps it was drugs or perhaps alcohol. We both know that after a number of hours, they need a “fix”. So how is it that you came into my practice a smoker and two hours later you walk out a non-smoker, NO cravings. So how can this be an addiction?” His response was, “Hmmm ok”. He did walk out a very happy non-smoker.

The problem with nicotine is that it suppresses the emotions. So when trying to quit smoking, those old emotions of anger, sadness, guilt etc may emerge so the person may feel angry, sad or guilty etc. This is discussed during the quit smoking hypnosis session. Anyone who needs additional support due to any of these The Richards Trauma Process (TRTP) is a wonderful way to address any anxiety, depression, PTSD, panic attacks and other emotional issues. A holistic approach is taken to all the therapies provided and especially Quit Smoking Hypnosis.
