Music: The Ultimate Exercise Companion

If you are thinking about beginning a weight loss  journey then you have probably heard that the exercise component of weight management is much easier done with an exercise buddy; someone who can push and support you along the way. But that buddy doesn’t have to be a person.  Music can be your workout companion. Don’t laugh, this is serious business—even scientists say so!

Neurologists have shown that music is an excellent exercise partner because it increases our ability to perform physical and mental labor. Listening to music helps your body forget about fatigue, gives you a sense of balance and rhythm, and keeps your mind in  a state of dissociative focus—you know what you are doing but since your mind is into the music, you stay in a mode that is similar to a trance-like state. You tune in and and zone out (in a good way of course).

Music also makes exercise more enjoyable in general. Music makes it easier for you to push yourself longer and harder because you are less likely to get bored. Modern attention spans are limited due to fast-paced, technologically driven contemporary societies; this makes it hard for people to focus for long periods of time without external stimulation. Is this a good thing? Not really. But the fact that music can help our minds relax and re-focus on a task like exercise is definitely a step in the positive direction of mindfulness.

Make use of one of the great beauties of life: music. Make use of it while you exercise; make use of it as a weight loss partner. Imagine how much more enjoyable your jogs through the park would be with your favorite symphony or rock band as your guide. Indeed, listening to music can turn a weight loss chore into a weight loss pleasure!
